Eldorado Roadside Tree Project
The Eldorado Roadside Tree Project maintains the roadside trees along approximately 25 miles of paved roads and seeks to create a more attractive road scape in Eldorado. It is staffed by volunteers from the Eldorado area and works in collaboration with the ECIA Road Committee and the Santa Fe County Public Works Department. Volunteers trim and shape the deciduous trees, remove dead wood, suckers, water sprouts, and low hanging branches. Their goal is to improve the health of the trees, enhance the beauty of the roadside, remove trees that obstruct visibility, and assist the County in resolving resident complaints. The County reciprocates by picking up the brush and mowing around the younger trees. Once a year the Project organizes a pruning workshop for Eldorado residents, presented by the County Agricultural Extension Officer and co-sponsored by the Road Committee, the Conservation Committee, and the Santa fe Master Gardiner's Association. The Project focuses on deciduous trees in the right of way, which, for the most part are Siberian Elms and Russian Olives. These trees are much maligned as invasive species that are not native to New Mexico, but they are the only trees that survive without supplemental water in a landscape that is becoming increasingly hot and dry. The Project is dedicated to making otherwise messy trees into a community resource that provides shade, cooler temperatures, carbon sinks, and roadside adornments.

Vista Grande Public Library
VGPL is an independent, community built 501(C)(3) public library which opened in 2001 with the goal of fostering life-long learning in a supportive community environment. We are open Tues-Fri 10-6 and Sat 10-4 (Closed Sunday and Monday). We are almost entirely volunteer-staffed with a current group of approximately 50 volunteers who maintain daily operations under the supervision of the Library Director and Library Assistant. We also have an all-volunteer Board, multiple committees and several fundraising events during the year where volunteer support is essential.
We provide services such as physical materials for all ages -- books, audio books, DVDs, CDs, telescopes and museum passes. In addition we have free computer use, both patron computers and free WiFi during open hours. We collaborate with local organizations to create a diverse range of programming. Our offerings include but are not limited to family movie nights, Summer and After School Reading, Storytime (toddler through pre-k), reading to therapy dogs, author talks, local interest programs, local artist exhibitions and special events.
We receive some monetary and material support from Santa Fe County, but are neither a County nor City library and as a result raise more than 50% of our operating budget each year through various activities, none of which would be possible without volunteer assistance. We are also pleased to offer opportunities for local students to earn the community service hours that are often needed for graduation. We have an ongoing need for volunteers and a wide array of ways to become involved.
